The 2006 Jeep Commander has 4 recalls, the most serious involving two separate issues that can cause the engine to shut off unexpectedly while driving, cutting power to the steering, brakes, and airbags. One of these affects vehicles with the 4.7L engine, where a software flaw in the powertrain control module can cause the engine to stall and leave the driver without propulsion. The other involves the ignition switch, where an overloaded key ring or knee contact can knock the key out of the run position, killing the engine and disabling critical safety systems mid-drive. On the safety equipment side, the third-row seatbelt retractor bracket can rub against the belt webbing, fraying or cutting it so it may not hold an occupant in a crash. There is also a brake concern, where a software issue in the anti-lock brake system can cause a brief delay in braking response when coasting uphill, potentially causing a crash before the driver has time to react.
