The 2016 Kia Optima has 6 recalls, the most serious being a front axle driveshaft that can crack and break on 2.4L models, causing sudden loss of power and, if the car is parked on a slope, an unexpected rollaway. Vehicles that previously had an engine replaced under an earlier recall or warranty repair may have a fuel leak that raises the risk of a fire if an ignition source is present. On the airbag side, two separate issues affect the driver's frontal airbag: on certain early-production vehicles, a missing chemical component prevents the airbag's second stage from deploying in a crash, and on one specific vehicle, an improperly installed end seal can cause the airbag to inflate with less force than intended, both of which reduce protection in a collision. There is also a trunk latch concern: the latch base can crack and prevent the trunk from opening from the inside, which could trap a person in the trunk compartment.
