The 2019 Kia Optima has 3 recalls, the most serious affecting hybrid and plug-in hybrid models where the engine can fail without warning, cutting power and making the car unable to restart, with a risk of fire.
The engine control module on those hybrid models receives a software update to detect problems before a full failure occurs. On the safety system side, a software error in the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist system can prevent automatic emergency braking from engaging when a stationary vehicle is detected ahead, reducing the car's ability to slow down or stop in time to avoid a crash. This issue affects vehicles equipped with either the 1.6L Turbo or 2.0L Turbo engines, and prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the issue across all affected vehicles.
