The 2003 Kia Rio has 4 recalls, all centered on child seat safety: the rear seatbelt retractors can disengage their automatic locking function when used with certain child seats, and the lower anchor points may not allow a child seat to attach securely. When the automatic locking retractor releases, the belt falls back to its standard mode and can no longer hold a child seat tightly in place, raising the risk of the seat shifting in a crash. Separately, the lower anchor hardware in the rear seat can interfere with the seat back frame, preventing the anchor from engaging fully, which means a child seat clipped to those anchors may not be properly secured either. Both issues increase the risk of injury to a child passenger in a collision.
