13 recalls across 15 model years
The Lexus RX has 13 recalls spanning 2004 through 2026, with the most serious recent issue being a driver's airbag clockspring defect on 2023 models where the airbag can be deactivated and fail to deploy in a crash, raising the risk of injury.
The 2023-2026 generation carries several recalls worth knowing. The clockspring issue on 2023 models was subject to a prior repair attempt that did not fully resolve the problem, resulting in a follow-up recall for vehicles that had already been serviced. On 2020-2021 models, a faulty passenger seat occupancy sensor can prevent the front airbag from deploying in a crash. The 2024-2025 model years have a second-row center seat belt with potentially damaged webbing that may not hold an occupant properly in a crash. The 2024 model year also has front head restraints that can pull free without pressing the release button, and if not reinstalled before a rear-end collision, they leave occupants without neck support. Rearview camera issues affect 2023-2026 vehicles in two separate ways: the camera image may not appear at all when shifting into reverse, and on models equipped with the Panoramic View Monitor system, a software error can cause the image to freeze or go blank. The 2025 model year has an instrument panel display that can fail to show critical driving information.
Going back to the fourth-generation RX, the 2016 model year has two airbag concerns: pressure and acceleration sensors that can fail and prevent side curtain and front airbags from deploying in a crash, and a driver's knee airbag inflator with a weld defect that allows inflation gas to escape, leaving the knee airbag unable to protect the driver. The 2019 RX350L has a low-pressure fuel pump that can fail and stall the engine.
Earlier production has a pair of issues. The 2006-2007 RX400h has an inverter transistor that can be damaged by heat during hard driving, causing the vehicle to drop into a reduced-power limp mode. On 2004-2007 models across the RX330, RX350, and RX400h, a floor carpet cover near the center console can lean toward the accelerator pedal if its retention clip is not properly seated, holding the pedal in a partially depressed position instead of letting it return to idle.
