14 recalls across 7 model years
The Mercedes-Benz AMG E63S has 14 recalls spanning 2013 through 2021, with the most serious being a wiring defect on 2018-2021 models where the starter motor positive cable can chafe against the power supply harness, causing a short circuit that can stall the vehicle or start a fire.
A separate fire risk exists on 2018-2019 models, where the oil feed line to the turbocharger can leak onto hot engine or exhaust components. On 2019 wagon models, the tailgate-mounted spoiler can detach while driving and become a road hazard for other vehicles.
Several recalls on 2018-2021 models affect occupant protection in a crash. On 2019 wagon models, an incorrect driver airbag and software combination can prevent the restraint system from functioning properly. On 2018 models, the front passenger seat can travel beyond its intended range of motion, and the AMG performance seat backrests on 2018 models may have inadequate welds that allow the seat structure to fail in a crash. The 2020 model year has a left-rear seatback latch that may not hold against cargo loads in a crash. On 2020-2021 models, the front passenger seat limiter can allow the seat to sit too close to the airbag, raising the risk of injury when the airbag deploys. The 2018 model year also has a passenger seat sensor that may not deactivate the front passenger airbag when a child seat is present. On 2018-2019 models, the seatbelt pretensioners and the pre-crash tensioning system may fail to activate in a crash.
The 2019 model year has a radar-based automatic emergency braking system that may not apply partial or full braking as expected. On 2021 models, a heated steering wheel defect can disable the hands-off detection feature, preventing the driver assistance system from issuing steering wheel warnings or contacting emergency services through the automatic stop function. The 2021 model year also has a multimedia system software issue that can cause the backup camera display to go black or reboot, reducing rear visibility when reversing.
Going back to earlier production, 2013-2015 models have a software fault in the emergency call system that can report an incorrect vehicle location to first responders.
