19 recalls across 5 model years
The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT53 has 19 recalls covering 2019 through 2023 model years, with the most serious being a loose 48-volt ground cable connection in the engine compartment on 2021-2023 vehicles that can overheat and start a fire.
Two additional fire risks affect the wiring system. On 2019-2022 models, the transmission wiring harness can be misrouted, exposing an electrical connector to corrosion and causing a short circuit that can ignite a fire. A follow-on recall covers 2019-2023 models where the same wiring harness connection may have been incorrectly wired during a prior repair or during original production, carrying the same short-circuit and fire risk. The 2019 model year has a separate fuel injector issue where a fuel leak near hot engine or exhaust components can also cause a fire.
On 2022-2023 models, the fuel pump can shut down without warning, cutting drive power while the vehicle is moving. The 2021 model year carries several occupant protection concerns: loose side crash sensor connectors can delay airbag and seatbelt deployment in a side impact, seatbelt pretensioners may not perform correctly in a crash, and the backup camera display can go black or reboot, reducing rear visibility. Also on 2021 models, the rear seatbelt retractors can release their automatic locking function too early, preventing a child safety seat from staying secured.
Going back to 2019-2020 models, an incorrect electronic stability control software version can cause the system to respond inaccurately to driving situations. The 2020 model year has a left-rear seatback latch that may not hold against cargo loads in a crash, allowing the seatback to fold forward. On 2019-2020 vehicles, wheel hub caps can detach while driving and become a hazard for other road users.
The 2023 model year has a software error that can disable the door exit warning system, preventing audio and visual alerts when a passing vehicle approaches as an occupant opens a door. On 2022 models, a fault in the heated steering wheel system can disable hands-off detection, which in turn prevents the driver monitoring and emergency stop features from functioning. The 2019 model year also has a center console latch that can release in a crash, allowing the storage compartment to open and unsecured items to enter the cabin. Emergency call system failures appear across 2019-2021 models in two separate recalls, where the system can either fail to connect to emergency services or transmit an incorrect vehicle location after a crash.
