The 2003 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has two recalls of equal seriousness: one where a corroded intake manifold can leak exhaust gas and potentially ignite nearby fuel lines, and one where tire valve stems can crack or separate and cause a sudden blowout.
The intake manifold recall involves corrosion inside the exhaust channel that allows hot exhaust gas to escape, which can damage the fuel return line and scorch nearby insulation, creating a fire risk. The wheel recall affects vehicles equipped with 16-inch tires: the rubber and metal portions of the valve stem can crack or pull apart in hot conditions, causing rapid air loss with little warning and making the vehicle difficult to control.
