The 2016 MINI Cooper Convertible has 3 recalls, the most serious involving the steering gearbox, which can malfunction and cause a sudden loss of vehicle control.
The driver's seatbelt retractor is also affected: the locking mechanism on the driver's side may not engage as designed during hard braking, allowing the belt to pay out at the moment it should be holding the occupant back, which raises the risk of injury in a crash. On the lighting side, a separate recall covers a brakelight that cuts out when the turn signal is activated at the same time, leaving following drivers without a clear signal that the car is slowing, which can create confusion in traffic.
