The 1993 Nissan Maxima has two recalls, both concerning the same defect: aluminum wheels with excessive clear coat that allows wheel nuts to loosen over time, which can break the hub bolts and cause a wheel to separate from the vehicle while driving.

The extra coating layers compress under load, preventing the wheel nuts from seating tightly against the hub. As the nuts back off, the hub bolts take on stress they are not designed to handle alone, and one or more can fracture. A wheel coming off at speed leaves the driver with little ability to control the vehicle.
