The 2023 Nissan Z has 4 recalls, all centered on the pop-up engine hood system that is designed to lift the rear of the hood during a pedestrian collision to reduce the risk of serious injury.
Two separate defects can prevent this safety feature from working correctly. On certain vehicles, the pedestrian detection sensor connectors on the right side of the front bumper may be installed in reverse, so the sensors cannot trigger the hood to rise in a crash. On others, the fasteners securing the left-side front bumper reinforcement clip may be loose, which can also prevent the hood from activating when needed. Either issue leaves the hood sitting flat in a frontal pedestrian impact rather than lifting to create cushioning space above the engine.
