The 1995 Pontiac Sunfire has 6 recalls, the most serious being a front suspension defect where missing welds on the lower control arms can cause a front suspension component to break away, leading to sudden loss of steering control without warning. An equally serious electrical concern involves the ignition switch: if the key is held in the start position for too long, excessive heat can melt internal switch components and start a fire in the steering column, even after the engine is off and the key is removed. The powertrain control module can also corrode from road salt exposure, causing the check engine light to come on, the engine to run rough, or in more serious cases the engine to stall and refuse to restart. Two lighting recalls round out the list: the hazard warning flashers may not blink when the hazard switch is activated, and on automatic transmission models, the instrument panel trim plate can sag and block the shift indicator light.
