The 2008 RAM 5500 has 3 recalls, the most serious being a steering defect on four-wheel-drive models where the left tie rod assembly can fracture, causing a sudden and complete loss of steering control.
The tie rod failure can occur at the ball stud on the outer end of the assembly, and if it breaks while driving, the driver loses the ability to steer the vehicle. There is also an alternator concern: the 220-amp alternator fitted to these trucks can fail without warning, causing the engine to stall unexpectedly in traffic, or in a worse case, short-circuit and start a fire under the hood.
