The 2003 Subaru Baja has 11 recalls, the dominant issue being the front passenger airbag inflator, which can rupture during deployment and send metal fragments into the cabin, causing serious injury or death.
All but one of these recalls address the same passenger-side airbag inflator defect. Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the problem, and multiple campaigns have been filed over time to reach all affected vehicles. The inflator can over-pressurize when the airbag fires, causing it to burst and scatter sharp metal fragments toward anyone in the vehicle. On the mechanical side, there is one recall covering 4-cylinder models where the water pump pulley can work loose and separate, which can cause severe engine damage while driving.
