The 2005 Subaru Baja has 11 recalls, dominated by a well-known passenger frontal airbag defect where the inflator can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin, posing a serious risk of injury or death to occupants.
The airbag issue stems from propellant inside the inflator that degrades over time, particularly in high-heat and high-humidity environments, causing the inflator to explode with excessive force. Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the problem, which is why multiple campaigns address the same underlying defect. There are also two fuel system recalls covering cracks that can develop at fuel hose connections near the fuel pump outlet, allowing gasoline to leak. If that leaked fuel reaches an ignition source, a fire can result.
