The 2015 Tesla Model S has 8 recalls, the most serious being a defective passenger frontal airbag inflator that can explode and send metal fragments into the cabin, causing serious injury or death. A separate recall covers the front trunk latch, which may be misaligned so the secondary hood latch does not engage; if the primary latch is then released, the hood can fly open and block the driver's view. On the steering side, bolts attaching the power steering assist motor can corrode and break, making the wheel significantly harder to turn, particularly at low speeds. There is also a seatbelt concern: the driver or front passenger belt may not be correctly attached to the pretensioner, meaning it may not hold an occupant properly in a crash. The electric parking brake contains an internal gear that can fracture, potentially leaving the vehicle unable to move after the brake is applied. The center display on certain vehicles uses aging memory hardware that can fail, taking the rearview camera, defrost and defog controls, and turn signals down with it. Rounding out the list, warning light text for the brake and anti-lock brake system indicators may be displayed too small to read clearly, and the seatbelt reminder chime and warning light may not activate when the driver is unbelted.
