Cargo in the trunk can also contact the subwoofer's braided wiring and push it out of position, which contributes to the same short circuit risk. On the interior side, the seat cushion can compress over time and damage the wiring beneath the heated seat, causing a short that may burn the seat and injure the occupant.

What can fail

Trunk cargo can shift the sub-woofer's soft wire out of position. If the wire contacts the sub-woofer's metal frame, it may short and damage the audio amplifier's chip. A damaged chip can cause continuous current flow to the sub-woofer, making it overheat and creating a fire risk.

What the fix does

Dealers will replace the audio amplifier and install a protective cover around the sub-woofer. Until then, dealers will disconnect the rear sub-woofer.
