2009 Toyota Corolla Matrix

The 2009 Toyota Corolla Matrix has 4 recalls, the most serious being a defective passenger-side airbag inflator that can rupture or explode and send sharp metal fragments into the cabin, with a risk of serious injury or death.

Three of the four recalls address the same underlying airbag inflator defect, which is part of the broader Takata inflator issue affecting millions of vehicles across many brands. The passenger-side front airbag inflator can fail violently when the airbag deploys, breaking apart and throwing metal fragments toward the driver and passengers rather than inflating the bag to cushion them. This defect was filed across multiple campaigns and affects certain vehicles depending on where they were originally sold or registered, with particular focus on high-humidity states and territories such as Florida, Hawaii, Texas, and Gulf Coast regions, where moisture accelerates the risk of inflator failure.

The remaining recall involves the power window switch. Moisture and debris can get into the switch assembly when the lubricant on the internal sliding contacts wears away or is absent. Without that protective layer, the contacts can arc and short circuit, causing the switch to overheat and melt. At minimum this disables the window controls, but a melting switch also raises a fire risk inside the door panel.
