The 2009 Toyota Corolla Matrix has 4 recalls, the most serious being a defective passenger-side airbag inflator that can explode and send sharp metal fragments into the cabin, causing serious injury or death.
Three of the four recalls cover this same airbag inflator issue, which primarily affects vehicles registered in high-humidity states and territories. Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the problem for all affected vehicles, which is why multiple recall campaigns exist for this defect. The fourth recall involves the power window switch, where a lack of lubrication allows moisture and debris to cause a short circuit inside the switch assembly, which can then overheat and melt, raising the risk of a fire at the door panel.
