The 2012 Toyota Corolla Matrix has 3 recalls, all involving the front passenger airbag inflator, which can rupture and send sharp metal fragments into the cabin, causing serious injury or death.
All three recalls address the same defect in the passenger-side frontal airbag inflator. In a crash where the airbag deploys, the inflator can explode with more force than intended, spraying metal fragments toward occupants rather than inflating the bag safely. Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the issue, which is why multiple recall campaigns exist for this defect. These recalls apply to vehicles sold or ever registered in high-humidity states and territories including Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, and other affected zones, as prolonged exposure to heat and humidity contributes to the inflator's failure.
