The 2011 Toyota Prius has 5 recalls, the most serious being an inverter defect where excessive voltage or heat damage inside the hybrid system's power module can cause the vehicle to stall unexpectedly while driving.
A related inverter issue can push the vehicle into a reduced-power limp-home mode that significantly limits how the car drives, though prior repair attempts may not have fully resolved this for all affected vehicles. On the cooling side, a scratch inside the hybrid system's electric water pump can cause the pump's internal wiring to corrode and break, stopping coolant flow to the hybrid system. There is also a curtain airbag concern: a cracked weld inside the inflator can cause pieces of the inflator housing to eject into the cabin during deployment. Finally, certain vehicles equipped with aftermarket seat heaters face a fire risk if the copper heating element inside the seat shorts out.
