The 2012 Toyota Prius has 5 recalls, the most serious being a curtain airbag inflator with a cracked weld that can eject fragments into the passenger cabin during deployment.
Two recalls share the same root concern in the hybrid drive system: excessive voltage or heat in the inverter's power module can damage internal transistors, either shutting the hybrid system down entirely and stalling the vehicle while moving, or forcing the car into a reduced-power limp mode that limits how far and fast it can be driven. On plug-in hybrid models specifically, the hybrid battery's fuse can fracture under high electrical load, such as during a long uphill climb on electric power alone. There is also a fire risk tied to certain aftermarket heated front seats: a copper heating element in the seat can short circuit if damaged, raising the risk of a fire in the cabin.
