The 2014 Toyota Prius has 3 recalls, all involving the same underlying issue: a component inside the hybrid inverter can fail due to excessive voltage or heat, causing the car to stall or lose power while driving.
In the more serious cases, the hybrid system can shut down without warning while the car is in motion, cutting drive power and raising the risk of a crash. In a less severe version of the same problem, the inverter's internal transistors can be damaged by high operating temperatures, causing the car to drop into a reduced-power mode that limits how the vehicle responds. Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the issue for all affected vehicles, which is why multiple recall campaigns cover what is essentially the same defect across overlapping model years.
