The 2014 Toyota RAV4 has 5 recalls, the most serious involving a risk of fire from a replacement 12-volt battery that may not seat properly in its tray, shift around, and short against the hold-down bracket.
Two recalls affect the electric power steering system. The steering control unit's circuit board can develop damage over time that causes sudden loss of power assist, making the steering wheel significantly harder to turn; a warning light typically comes on as well. Note that Recall 2 applies only to RAV4 EV models: a software issue in the electric traction motor assembly can cause the motor to shift into neutral unexpectedly, cutting drive power while the vehicle is moving. There is also a trailer lighting concern on vehicles equipped with an accessory trailer light module, where the module's software can incorrectly read a fault and shut off the trailer lights while towing at night, reducing visibility to other drivers.
