One filing specifically covers vehicles in high-humidity regions including Florida, Gulf Coast states, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and U.S. territories, where moisture accelerates the degradation that leads to rupture. Another covers a broader range of vehicles regardless of where they were sold or registered. In both cases, the danger is the same: in a crash that triggers the passenger airbag, the inflator can burst apart rather than inflate the bag properly, turning its metal housing into shrapnel inside the vehicle.
A separate recall covers the side curtain airbags, which can deploy without a crash. An unexpected deployment can startle a driver or strike an occupant, raising the risk of injury even when nothing has gone wrong on the road.
On the interior side, certain vehicles equipped with aftermarket heated front seats face a fire risk. The copper heating element woven into the seat cushion can short circuit if damaged, which can ignite surrounding materials. This recall applies only to vehicles that had aftermarket seat heaters installed through Southeast Toyota Distributors, not vehicles with factory-installed seat heating.
