The spare tire system accounts for two related recalls, both affecting vehicles registered or originally sold in northern and mid-Atlantic states where road salt is common. A corroded cable in the undercarriage spare tire carrier can snap and release the spare tire while driving, turning it into a road hazard for other vehicles. Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve this issue, which is why it appears across more than one recall campaign. On the transmission side, a similar shift lock problem is covered by a separate recall: the shift lever can be moved out of Park without pressing the brake, allowing the vehicle to roll if the parking brake is not set. Together, these two transmission-related recalls describe the same practical danger, a vehicle moving unintentionally when the driver believes it is secured in Park.
