The 2012 Toyota Yaris has 6 recalls, the most serious being a Takata airbag inflator in the front passenger position that can explode and send metal fragments into the cabin, causing serious injury or death.
The airbag issue covers vehicles registered across a wide range of U.S. states and territories, with prior repair attempts not fully resolving the problem for all affected vehicles, which is why multiple filings exist for the same defect. On the structural side, vehicles sold or registered in Puerto Rico may have a roof headliner that does not absorb impact properly in a crash, raising the risk of head injury to occupants. The electric power steering system also has two recalls that describe the same underlying problem: a relay inside the steering control module can short circuit and fail, causing the power steering to cut out. When this happens, a warning light and buzzer activate, and the steering reverts to a fully manual mode that requires noticeably more effort, particularly when turning at low speeds.
