28 recalls across 15 model years
The Toyota Yaris has 28 recalls spanning the 2006–2020 production run, with the most serious being a Takata passenger-side airbag inflator defect on 2006–2012 models where the inflator can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin, causing serious injury or death.
The Takata airbag issue is the most consequential recall across this model's history and affected vehicles registered in high-humidity regions as well as broader geographic zones depending on the specific filing. All 2006–2012 owners should confirm this has been addressed.
The 2019–2020 model years share a fuel pump recall where an impeller inside the low-pressure pump can crack and deform, causing the engine to stall while driving. The 2019 model year is also covered by a separate fuel system recall where pump failure can cause rough running, a no-start condition, or a sudden loss of power on the road.
The 2015–2017 model years have a side airbag wiring issue where the wire harnesses running to the side airbag sensors inside the front doors can crack and corrode, preventing the side and curtain airbags from deploying in a crash. The 2015 model year has two additional suspension-related recalls: rear axle bearing bolts that can loosen and lock up a rear wheel or damage the rear brakes, and front strut mounting bearings that can crack when the suspension takes a hard hit, potentially causing the strut rod to separate and destabilize the vehicle. There is also a 2015 recall for corroded side airbag sensor wiring that overlaps with the 2015–2017 campaign described above.
The 2012 model year has an electric power steering relay that can short circuit and shut off power assist, reverting the steering to a fully manual feel that requires noticeably more effort, especially at low speeds. A 2012–2015 recall covers vehicles sold or registered in Puerto Rico where the roof headliner may not meet impact protection requirements in a crash.
Going back to 2006–2010 models, the driver's seat rail springs and front passenger seat rail springs on three-door models can break, causing the seat to appear locked while actually being free to slide in a crash. The power window master switch on 2006–2010 vehicles can overheat and melt if moisture and debris enter the switch assembly due to insufficient lubrication. The 2006 model year specifically has a seatbelt pretensioner issue where deployment can ignite nearby sound-insulating material and start a post-collision fire.
Label-related recalls cover 2016–2019 vehicles distributed through certain regional distributors, where load capacity labels may be incorrect, misprinted, or illegible. A 2017 model year recall involves spare tires that were not inflated to the correct pressure at the point of sale.
