The 1993 Volkswagen Golf has 7 recalls, the most serious being a hood latch that can loosen and disengage, allowing the hood to fly open while driving and blocking the driver's view of the road.
On the brake side, the rear brake line on the passenger side runs too close to the fuel tank and can chafe against it over time, eventually wearing through and causing brake fluid to leak, which reduces braking force and increases stopping distance. The radiator cooling fan motor shaft can wear down, seize, and stop spinning, causing the engine to overheat and stall. The windshield wiper motor can also stop working under certain conditions, leaving the driver with no way to clear the windshield. There are also two related recalls covering the scissor jack supplied with the vehicle: a sharp ridge on the jack spindle can damage the internal threads of the jack shoe, and if that damage is serious enough, the jack can collapse while the vehicle is raised, posing an injury risk to anyone nearby.
