The 2001 Volvo VNM has 5 recalls, the most serious being a wiper motor that can allow water intrusion, short circuit, and start a fire.
A failed seal lets water and contaminants reach the wiper motor, creating a short circuit that can develop into a vehicle fire over time. On the coupling side, a fatigue crack can form in the weld on Jost JSK 37U series fifth wheel brackets, potentially causing the top plate to separate from its mounting structure and drop the trailer. Corroded emergency start studs are another concern: road salt works under the protective caps on the chassis-mounted studs, deteriorating the connections until they loosen enough to cause an electrical short. There is also a brake system issue: on trucks equipped with Meritor Wabco pneumatic ABS valve packages, assembly bolts were not tightened to specification, and the affected valve package joints can leak air, reducing the reliability of the anti-lock brake system.
