Summary
The Volvo VNM has 29 recalls spanning 1997 through 2017, with the most serious recent issue affecting 2017 models where front wheel hubs cannot support the rated front axle load, causing the hub assembly to separate from the axle and leaving the driver without control of the front end.
The 2017 model year also has a recall where the engine control module can develop an internal short, blow its supply fuse, and stall the engine without warning. On 2016 models, castellated nuts on Dana Spicer steer axles may not be properly torqued, allowing the tie rod to detach from the steering knuckle and producing a complete loss of steering. The 2014-2015 models have disc brake calipers whose mounting bolts may not have been tightened to spec, allowing the caliper to pull free and cause the vehicle to veer sharply to one side.
The 2013-2017 model years share a brake system recall where incorrect software for the electronic air dryer can allow oil and water to contaminate the air brake system, degrading braking performance. On 2013 models specifically, certain front steer axles can fracture and cause loss of vehicle control, and a separate recall covers wheel rims that were manufactured out of spec and can fail, sending a wheel assembly into traffic.
The 2012-2016 models have a crankcase vent tube that can detach under excessive pressure, allowing engine oil to contact hot surfaces and start a fire. The 2008 model year has two steering-related recalls: mounting bolts on the steering gear can loosen and fall out, and the steering shaft retention nut may lack a locking feature, either of which can result in full loss of steering. A hood restraint cylinder issue on 2008 models leaves the hood unrestrained when opened.
The 2007 model year carries several issues: a fuel system heater thermoswitch that can short and ignite fuel near the filter element; fifth wheel latch jaws that may not close securely around the trailer king pin; axle housings with undersized steel that can fatigue and lock up or shed an axle end; a steering shaft nut that can back off; and driveshaft snap rings that can allow the universal joint to fracture and damage surrounding components.
Going further back, 2003 models have EGR cooler pipes on D12D engines that can crack and expose hot exhaust gases to the air cleaner and inner fender, creating a fire risk, and a circuit breaker system that may not adequately protect the lighting wiring from an overheating short. The 2001 model year has a windshield wiper motor susceptible to water intrusion and fire, a fifth wheel bracket pin weld that can crack under load and allow the top plate to separate from its mount, an ABS valve package with improperly torqued bolts that can allow air leakage, and corroding emergency start studs that can eventually short. The 1998 model has front steer axle hub bearings that can wear prematurely, seize, and cause wheel separation or a wheel-end fire. The 1997 model has a trailer ABS power circuit that can be interrupted when the driver activates the trailer interior lighting switch, disabling trailer anti-lock braking. The 2000 model is missing two rear reflectors on the frame crossmember, reducing visibility when running without a trailer at night, and the 2004 model has a certification label that omits the tire size designation.
