The 1997 Volvo WX has 6 recalls, the most serious including a steer axle wheel bearing that can back off the spindle and allow the wheel and brake drum to separate from the truck while moving.
Brake system safety accounts for most of the remaining issues. A faulty manifold dash valve used in the parking brake system can lose isolation between the two brake circuits, which may cause total service brake failure if one circuit has a separate failure. The anti-lock brake system on certain trucks can misread wheel speed sensor signals due to chafed wiring or a damaged tone ring, temporarily cutting braking ability at one or more wheels for several seconds and extending stopping distances. There is also a wiring concern: a mis-wired body builder option can allow the transmission to shift into forward gear without the driver pressing the brake pedal, removing a critical interlock. On the wheels, certain aftermarket aluminum dual wheels supplied by Accuride/AKW can develop fatigue cracks that lead to wheel failure.
