Summary
The Volvo XC70 has 12 recalls spanning the 2003–2020 model years, with the most serious being a 2011 engine and transmission software calibration issue where the idle speed can drop unexpectedly during braking or when lifting off the accelerator, causing a sudden stall with no warning.
Several recalls affect airbag and seatbelt systems across a wide range of years. On 2008–2020 models, the front seatbelt pretensioner system can develop a fault that leaves an occupant unsecured in a crash. On 2010–2011 models, the driver's airbag clockspring wiring connector can develop an intermittent fault, preventing the frontal airbag from deploying in a crash. The 2012 model has a wiring harness under the driver or passenger seat that can snag on the seat amplifier when the seat is adjusted, potentially disabling the airbag for that position. The 2008 model has two separate software issues in the airbag control module, both resulting in delayed deployment of the side curtain and side impact airbags during a side collision, which reduces occupant protection at the moment it is most needed.
On the mechanical side, 2008 models also have a cooling fan that can stop functioning due to a software error in the fan control module, causing the air conditioning to underperform and the engine to overheat, potentially leading to a breakdown. The 2014 model has a central electronic module issue affecting keyless ignition-equipped vehicles, where a false warning message can appear at startup.
The remaining recalls are compliance-related. Multiple 2008 models have a wheel information label on the rear driver's side door pillar that omits the rim size, making it harder to verify correct wheel fitment. The 2008–2010 model years have a similar issue with the tire placard not meeting federal tire selection and rim standards. The 2003 model year is missing child seat lower anchorage symbols from the owner's manual.
