The 1984 Audi 5000 has 4 recalls, the most serious being unintended acceleration when shifting from Park into Reverse or Drive, which can cause a crash with little or no warning.

Two recalls involve fire risk on turbocharged models. The fuel injector seals can harden over time and allow pressurized fuel to escape into the engine compartment, where it can contact hot surfaces and ignite. Separately, repeatedly topping off the fuel tank past the point where the pump automatically stops can reduce the expansion space in the tank. When that space is too small, fuel vapors can vent into the engine compartment rather than staying contained in the evaporative emissions system, again creating a fire risk. Both of these fuel system recalls affect turbo and Quattro variants. On the engine management side, the idle control unit in automatic transmission models can suffer internal electronic failures that cause the idle stabilizer valve to operate outside its normal range, making engine rpm fluctuate unpredictably and reducing the driver's ability to control the vehicle smoothly at low speeds.
