The head curtain airbags along the roofline may not deploy fully in a crash, which reduces the protection meant to keep an unbelted occupant from being partially ejected through the window opening. Separately, the front passenger seat contains a body-sensing mat that detects whether a person is sitting in the seat and adjusts airbag deployment accordingly. Stress or wear on that mat can cause the passenger occupant detection system to malfunction, potentially preventing the front passenger airbag from deploying in a crash and leaving that occupant with less protection than expected.
