The 2020 Chevrolet 5500HD has 4 recalls, the most serious being a brake fluid leak into the brake pressure switch that can cause an electrical short and start a fire while the truck is being driven or sitting parked.
The wheel and suspension systems each carry their own serious risks. Rear outer wheel lug nuts on certain trucks may not have been tightened properly at the factory and can continue to loosen in service until a wheel separates from the axle entirely while driving. On the rear suspension, the U-bolt nuts that clamp the rear axle to the leaf springs may also be insufficiently tightened and can work loose over time, allowing the axle to shift out of alignment. When that happens, the driveshaft can separate from its connection point, cutting power to the rear wheels and causing the truck to stall unexpectedly in traffic. There is also a seatbelt concern: the front seat belts on certain trucks equipped with a dual-mode locking mechanism may not properly restrain an occupant in a crash, raising the risk of injury.
