38 recalls across 19 model years
The Chevrolet Silverado 2500 has 38 recalls spanning the 2007–2026 model years, with the most serious recent issue being a 2024 steering gear shaft that can fracture and disconnect from the steering arm, causing total loss of steering control.
The 2024 model year also has a power-unlatching tailgate whose electronic release switch can short circuit from water intrusion and unlatch on its own while parked, potentially spilling cargo onto the road. On 2026 models, some vehicles left the factory without an owner's manual, which is a compliance issue rather than a mechanical defect.
The 2021–2022 model years have a brake pressure modulator valve assembly where loose bolts can allow water inside, creating an electrical short that raises the risk of fire. On 2020–2022 diesel-equipped models, the transmission control valve can fail and lock up the rear wheels without warning. The 2020 model year has a hood latch striker wire that can fracture and let the hood fly open while driving, a seatbelt pretensioner that can vent hot gas onto the carpet and start a fire, and a roof-rail airbag diffuser that can separate during deployment and reduce side curtain protection. Seat belt anchor bolts on 2020–2021 vehicles may be the wrong size, and the front-row center seat belt bracket may not be secured to the seat frame on the same years. A mismatched spare tire on 2020–2021 models equipped with 17-inch spares and larger road wheels can prevent the anti-lock brakes from controlling the rear wheels independently.
The 2018–2019 model years carry a roof-rail airbag inflator defect where the end cap can detach or the inflator sidewall can rupture, sending metal fragments or the cap itself into the cabin. The 2017–2019 diesel models with the optional engine block heater have an electrical short risk in the heater cable that can start an engine fire, and those same years with the dual fuel tank option have a rear tank that can collapse and cut off fuel transfer, stalling the engine. The 2017–2018 model years have front seat belt retractors built with the wrong torsion bar, meaning the belts may not perform correctly in a crash. On 2015–2016 models, the brake pedal pivot nut can loosen until the pedal becomes inoperative or catches on the accelerator, and the roof-rail airbag inflator end cap can detach and become a projectile inside the cabin. Those same years also have a crash sensor or pretensioner wiring issue that can prevent front airbags and pretensioners from deploying in a crash.
Going further back, the 2009–2014 model years have a Takata-related passenger frontal airbag inflator that can explode and send metal fragments into the cabin, a defect that affects vehicles originally sold or registered in high-humidity states and territories. The 2007–2008 model years share the same Takata inflator rupture risk, including vehicles that received interim replacement inflators that also contain the problematic propellant. The 2009–2014 range also includes vehicles equipped with certain fire extinguishers that may fail to discharge when needed.
