7 recalls across 9 model years
The Chevrolet 6500XD has 7 recalls spanning the 2018–2026 model years, with the most serious recent issue being a fuel heater defect on 2022–2026 models where the heater can overheat, melt its casing, and allow fuel to leak near electrical components, raising the risk of fire.
On 2020–2024 models equipped with the Mobileye Collision Warning System, an improperly routed camera cable can damage the wiring and overload the circuit, which can also overheat and start a fire. The axle stabilizer bracket bolts can crack and break across the full 2018–2026 production run, allowing the bracket to fall away from the vehicle and become a road hazard.
On 2018–2021 models, a bolt on the left front steering knuckle can come loose and increase the turning radius in a left turn, making the vehicle harder to steer. There is also a starter motor ground cable on 2018–2021 vehicles that can break at its eyelet; if the driver continues attempting to start the engine, current can reroute through the power steering hose's steel braiding, heating it until it ruptures.
Going back to 2018–2020 production, the chassis wire harness can chafe against the leaf spring hanger bracket, and depending on which wires are damaged, the engine can stall or anti-lock brakes can lose function. A separate 2018–2020 steering issue involves the jam nut on the steering stopper bolt backing away from the left front knuckle, again widening the turning radius in a left turn.
