These filings all address the same underlying Takata airbag inflator issue, which affects vehicles that were originally sold or later registered in high-humidity states and territories including Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, and several US territories. In those climates, moisture degrades the inflator's propellant over time, and when the airbag deploys, the inflator can rupture violently rather than inflate the bag in a controlled way. The metal fragments that result can travel at high speed toward anyone seated in the front passenger seat. Prior repair attempts under earlier campaigns did not fully resolve the issue for all affected vehicles, which is why multiple filings exist for what is functionally the same defect.
