16 recalls across 24 model years
The Chevrolet Impala has 16 recalls spanning the 1997 through 2019 model years, with the most serious recent issue being a 2014-2015 electronic parking brake that can fail to fully retract, keeping the brake pads partially engaged against the rotors and generating enough heat to start a fire.
The 2018-2019 model years have a rear brake caliper piston coating defect that can reduce rear braking performance, raising the risk of a crash. On 2014 models, loose fasteners can allow the steering intermediate shaft or lower ball joint to separate, causing a sudden loss of steering. There is also a 2014 electric power steering issue where a poor ground connection to the steering control module can cut power assist during startup or while driving, requiring much more effort to steer at low speeds. A 2014 transmission shift cable adjuster can disengage from the shift lever, leaving the driver unable to change gears and causing the gear indicator to show the wrong position. On 2014-2015 models with front vented-heated passenger seats, the passenger seat sensor system can fail to detect a child seat and leave the front airbag active, raising the risk of injury to a child in a crash. The center console latch on some 2014-2015 vehicles can fail to stay closed in a crash, turning the console door into a hazard for occupants.
Going back to the 2009-2010 model years, the front passenger seat frame can chafe and damage the wiring for the passenger presence sensor, causing the front passenger airbag to be disabled even when someone is seated. On those same years, the front seatbelt webbing may not have been properly secured to the lap belt pretensioner anchor, meaning the belt may not hold an occupant in a crash. The 2008-2012 police package Impala has a front lower control arm that can fracture, causing loss of vehicle control; this recall does not apply to non-police versions. A 2012 model year issue involves a misrouted power steering hose that can contact the catalytic converter, melt through, and spray fluid onto the hot exhaust, starting an engine fire.
The ignition switch recall covers 1997-2008 models, where a heavy key ring can pull the ignition out of the run position while driving, disabling the airbags in a crash. On 2000-2004 models, engine oil can leak and drip onto the exhaust manifold, creating a fire risk, with a narrower version of the same defect affecting certain 2004 production dates specifically.
