The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu has 4 recalls, the most serious being a side airbag inflator that can separate during a crash and send debris into the cabin, and a fuel pump that can detach and damage the fuel line, creating a fire risk.
Two recalls involve occupant protection beyond the airbag debris issue. The passenger seat sensor may have been installed during a prior service visit without being properly calibrated to the seat, which can cause the front passenger airbag to deploy incorrectly in a crash. On the restraint side, the rear seatbelt retractors may be held in place with loose or missing fasteners, meaning the belt may not hold an occupant properly when it matters most.
