The wheel and fire risks are the headline concerns, but two structural and safety equipment issues round out the picture. The side door impact beams on certain vehicles have a pad that was placed incorrectly during assembly, meaning the doors may not absorb a side-impact collision as designed, leaving occupants with less protection than the structure is supposed to provide. On the interior safety side, the cover over the passenger-side airbag does not meet the required standard for occupant protection in crashes where the airbags do not deploy. If a front-seat passenger's head contacts that cover during a collision, the risk of head injury is higher than it should be.
