The 2003 Ford Escape has 3 recalls, the most serious involving the lower control arm and a throttle that can stick wide open, either of which can cause a crash.
The lower control arm can separate from the frame, causing a sudden and significant loss of steering control. This recall applies to vehicles in certain northern and mid-Atlantic states where road salt accelerates corrosion. On the engine side, this recall only affects V6 models: the speed control cable can bind against the engine cover and hold the throttle open at high engine speeds, making the vehicle difficult to slow or stop. The third recall is narrower in scope, affecting vehicles that had their automatic transmission replaced with a remanufactured unit during a specific window in 2015. In those vehicles, the shift lever can disengage from the transmission, leaving the driver unable to change gears and causing the gear indicator to show a position that does not match where the transmission actually is.
