The 2004 Ford Escape has 4 recalls, with two of the most serious involving loss of vehicle control: a lower control arm that can separate from the frame and cause sudden steering loss, and a stuck throttle on V6 models that can make the vehicle difficult to slow or stop.
The steering recall applies to vehicles registered in certain northern and midwestern states where road salt accelerates corrosion. The throttle recall is limited to Escapes equipped with the 3.0L V6 engine, where the engine cover can press against the speed control cable connector and jam the throttle open at high accelerator positions. A third recall applies only to vehicles that had their automatic transmission replaced with a remanufactured unit during a specific window in 2015: the shift lever can disengage from the transmission, leaving the driver unable to change gears and the gear indicator showing the wrong position. There is also a compliance recall covering the rear liftgate latch, which may not hold closed if the liftgate is left unlocked and the vehicle is in a severe collision.
