14 recalls across 11 model years
The Ford Flex has 14 recalls spanning the 2009–2019 production run, with the most serious being a fuel delivery module that can crack and leak fuel on 2013 models, creating a fire risk in the presence of any ignition source.
The final production years carry several notable issues. On 2019 models, improperly secured power supply cables at the starter and alternator can arc electrically and start a fire. Also on 2019 models, the rearview camera can display a blank or distorted image while backing up, reducing visibility behind the vehicle. The 2017–2019 models share a structural issue where the B-pillar door trim on the driver and front passenger sides can work loose and detach while driving, becoming a road hazard.
The middle years of production have a cluster of fire and handling concerns. On 2016–2017 models equipped with the 3.5L EcoBoost engine, turbocharger oil supply tubes can leak oil onto hot engine components, raising the risk of an engine fire. The 2013–2015 models with the 3.5L EcoBoost have a fuel pump module that can overheat, cutting power to the fuel pump and causing the engine to stall or refuse to start. On 2013–2018 models with the Police Interceptor or SHO Performance Pack, the rear suspension toe links can fracture under stress, causing a sudden and unpredictable change in handling. A small batch of 2015 models built during a narrow window in May of that year have a parking brake that may not fully engage, allowing the vehicle to roll away on a slope if the transmission is not in Park. The 2014 model year has a seat track defect that can cause the passenger seat occupant classification system to misread the occupant's weight, which can affect how the airbag system responds in a crash.
Going back further, 2011–2013 models can lose electric power steering assist, requiring significantly more effort to steer at low speeds. The 2009–2012 models have a driver frontal airbag that can inflate improperly during the second stage of deployment in a high-speed crash, raising the risk of occupant injury.
