The 2006 Ford Mustang has 4 recalls, all involving Takata frontal airbag inflators on both the driver and passenger sides that can rupture in a crash and send metal fragments into the cabin, causing serious injury or death.
Both the driver-side and passenger-side frontal airbag inflators are affected. The driver-side inflator can take on moisture over time, which degrades the propellant and raises the risk of a violent rupture when the airbag deploys. The passenger-side inflators are covered by multiple filings, some of which specifically apply to vehicles registered in high-humidity states and territories including Florida, Hawaii, Texas, and others in that climate zone. In all cases, the concern is the same: a crash that triggers airbag deployment can cause the inflator to explode and scatter metal fragments toward the driver and passengers rather than providing protection.
