131 recalls across 39 model years
The Ford Mustang has 131 recalls spanning the 1972–2026 model years, with the most serious recent issue being a steering sensor calibration defect on 2022–2023 models where the steering wheel can suddenly jerk side to side on its own while turning, causing loss of control.
The 2024 and 2025 model years carry a dense cluster of safety-related recalls. On 2024 models, the rear suspension knuckles can crack and break, causing sudden loss of vehicle stability. The brake pedal assembly can be loose, and a separate recall covers 2020 automatic-transmission models where the brake pedal bracket can fracture during hard stops, both conditions removing braking function. A damaged low-pressure fuel supply line on 2024 EcoBoost models can leak fuel in the engine compartment, and fuel injectors assembled without O-ring support discs on some 2024 vehicles can also leak fuel. The clutch pressure line on 2024 manual-transmission cars can contact hot exhaust components, melt, and cause fluid to leak. Some 2024 vehicles with dealer-installed supercharger upgrade kits have software that can cause unexpected acceleration. On the electrical side, 2024 and 2025 models have a body control module that can let water in and disable exterior lights, and the instrument cluster can go dark at startup or while driving, hiding speed and warning information. The 2025 model year adds a transmission valve body defect that can cause reverse gear to fail or produce unexpected forward movement, an EGR valve that can fail and cut drive power, and a headlight module defect that can kill low beams, high beams, and turn signals on one side. The 2026 model year has two engine-related recalls: piston circlips that may be missing or improperly installed on 2.3L engines, causing piston failure and loss of drive power, and cylinder head ball plugs that can fail and leak oil near hot engine components.
The 2021–2023 range has its own cluster. On 2022–2023 vehicles, a loose bolt in the automatic transmission can prevent the park gear from fully engaging, allowing rollaway when the gear selector shows Park. The 2021 model year has side curtain airbags that may not inflate correctly and a front passenger knee airbag with insufficient welds that can also fail to deploy properly, both reducing crash protection. On 2021–2022 models, the front passenger knee airbag weld issue also appears in a separate filing. The low-pressure fuel pump on 2021–2022 models can fail and stall the engine while driving. From 2020–2023, a software fault can prevent the brake fluid warning light from illuminating when fluid is low, with an earlier repair attempt under a prior recall not always completing the fix. Several 2019–2023 rearview camera issues span this era, including wiring faults, software errors, and blank or distorted images when backing up. On 2019–2020 models, the powertrain control module can disable the reverse camera, reverse lights, and driver assistance features. The 2019 instrument cluster can go blank at startup, hiding speed and safety warnings.
The 2015–2018 generation carries significant airbag-related recalls. The most serious involves the Takata passenger frontal airbag inflator on 2005–2014 models, where the propellant can degrade over time and cause the inflator to rupture, sending metal fragments into the cabin. This defect spawned multiple filing rounds covering different year subsets and geographic zones
