The 2018 GMC Sierra 3500 has 6 recalls, the most serious involving fire risks from the optional engine-block heater cord, which can short-circuit and ignite, and from a fuel tank defect that can cause the front tank to overfill, expand, and contact the driveshaft, puncturing the tank.
On the fuel system side, trucks with the dual tank option also face a separate issue where the rear tank can collapse and cut off fuel transfer to the front, causing the engine to stall while driving. Crew Cab models have a curtain airbag recall where the inflator's end cap can detach or the inflator sidewall can rupture, sending metal fragments into the cabin during deployment. The front seatbelt retractors on certain trucks were built with the wrong internal component and may not hold properly in a crash. Note that the engine-block heater fire risk applies only to trucks equipped with the Duramax 6.6-liter diesel and the optional block heater cord, while the fuel overfill concern applies to gasoline-engine models with dual tanks.
