The 2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring has 4 recalls, the most serious involving the driver's airbag inflator, which can rupture during deployment and send metal fragments toward occupants, and a separate fault where airbags and seatbelt pretensioners can fire without a crash.
The unintended airbag deployment can occur while the vehicle is stopped or moving at low speed, startling the driver and raising the risk of a crash. On the brake side, moisture can get into the anti-lock brake module and cause an electrical short that may start an engine compartment fire, even when the car is parked and turned off. The electric power steering system can also disable its assist if the steering control unit detects a signal it does not recognize, requiring noticeably more effort to turn the wheel at low speeds.
