When that happens, the airbag may not fully inflate to protect the driver, and metal fragments can be driven toward anyone in the front of the cabin. There is also a structural issue: a support bracket attached to the headliner can shift out of position when the side curtain airbags deploy in a crash, and if it strikes an occupant it can cause a laceration.
