The idle stop-start system uses a small electric oil pump to keep the transmission lubricated when the engine shuts off at a stop, and a damaged component inside that pump's controller can build up enough heat to start a fire. On the safety restraint side, the side curtain airbags for third-row passengers can deploy improperly in a crash, reducing their ability to keep occupants inside the vehicle. Separate from the airbags, seat belt buckles at the driver, front passenger, and second-row window seats may fail to latch at all, leaving those occupants unrestrained if a crash occurs. The brake system also has a concern: a misaligned brake booster diaphragm can create an internal vacuum leak, causing the power assist to drop off and forcing the driver to push much harder on the pedal to stop, which extends stopping distances. Rounding out the recalls, the windshield wiper motor can cut out or stop entirely when snow or ice loads up on the windshield, leaving the driver without a clear view in winter conditions.
